GPS Distance Measuring legal since January 1st, 2006

The R&A and the USGA allow GPS Distance Measuring starting 2006
New interpretations of the Rules of Golf will allow the use of distance measuring devices such as the Mobile Golf Scorer™ by Local Rule even in Tournaments.

The R&A and the United States Golf Association have announced this change among 112 amendments to the book Decisions on the Rules of Golf. Published every two years, the new edition becomes effective for all golfers from January 1, 2006.

New Decision 14-3/0.5 changes the governing bodies’ sanction of the use of distance measuring devices, including GPS based systems and laser rangefinders by allowing a committee to permit the use of distance measuring devices by Local Rule.

We are more than happy to hear this news as we believe that everybody can get accurate distances today by using a Yardage Book, the Distances on the Sprinklers and counting Steps. The use of electronic devices will not bring any irregular advantage to the Player but will only make the game faster. Because of that we are very positive, that most Committees will amend their local rules accordingly.
